Okay, so now I learned more about the terminated set
at 14 Below. Apparently, someone slipped Brad a mickey in his drink (I guess he
didn't tip the waitress). When he ran off the stage, he was pretty much freaking
out and they took him to the hospital where they informed him that he had been
given a horse sedative, or something like that. Pretty scary. Apparently he's
recovered well, as he (and the rest of the Ziggens) played an excellent set at
The Iguana Cantina.
The space is kinda weird. I first went in the bar, and they have a fairly spacious stage for a bar there, but there was no band on and no band setting up. I sat there for a few minutes, and then went and questioned the doorman and he pointed me to the upstairs room where the bands play. This was a huge space (a little bit bigger than the Troubador, with a higher ceiling). There was a sizeable crowd, probably 50 or 60 people, but most of them hung back to the seats around the edges, while a few of us mostly hung out closer to the stage. The Zigs played a long set, dominated by instrumentals. That may have been a reaction to the fact that Bert's monitor wasn't working, so he couldn't really hear his vocals. One of the cool things about the Zigs is that they don't have a set list. I think their first three or four songs were planned out, as they just came out and played them bang-bang-bang-bang-bang. There was very little talk between numbers, unless someone was tuning. Generally, they'd finish one song and either Brad or Bert would start playing another one and everyone would pick up on it and just play. At one light moment, they asked for requests, and then played about a verse of Freebird. Jon took off during this to use the facilities, and I was tempted to jump up on stage, grab his bass and play along, since Freebird is one of a handful of songs I know on Bass. Anyway, enough chit-chat, enjoy the pix - |
